Tip Design

There are two different types of tip for soldering irons, they are:

Unplated – Cheap soldering irons (and quite often older ones) use a bare copper tip which is shaped with a file or sandpaper. One of the drawbacks for this type of tip is that it can suffer pitting and erosion.

Plated – Modern soldering iron tips are plated with copper which will increase the lifetime of the tip by a considerable amount. This type of plating resists erosion which is quite common due to the extreme high temperatures that modern soldering irons produce.
